(I will have written this in around December 2024)
I have now watched every single episode of The Walking Dead. HERE then, are my thoughts on the matter:
- Season 1 just sort of happens, then it's over.
- Season 2 is a slog, but stick with it.
- Seasons 3, 4 and 5 are the best.
- Season 6 makes some odd decisions. A lot of it involves herd management, and the black and white time hoppy episode is annoying.
- Season 7 is mostly terrible from episode 2 onwards.
- Season 8 improves matters with lots of gun battles, but really 7 and 8 should’ve been blended.
- The Scrapheap people are an embarrassment. I don’t know what the point of stick man was… It’s like he’s 5 characters in one.
- Season 9 picks up a whole bunch, before stumbling a bit.
- The whisperers are simultaneously fucking shit and ridiculous, AND quite good.
- Season 10 has a couple of decent moments, before farting itself to death with some of the worst pandemic television I’ve ever seen. The Negan one is alright though. Also, early on, it features the single greatest work of parental abdication in narrative history.
- Season 11 is a bloated, lame soap opera, with a handful of alright episodes and characters. A light seasoning, if you will.
INSIGHTFUL METAPHOR
Essentially the show is like a powerful bull. One that you personally feed, tend to, and watch grow up and mature… Before it’s hauled into a bull ring. There, you’re forced to watch as a gaudy fop stabs the bull with a succession of nasty sharpened barbs (each carrying a label marked with the name of a bad character or idea. One with the name Princess catches your eye.) Oh, the bull gets up occasionally and tries to run at the matador… But you can see it’s lost a lot of blood, and that its eyes are glazed over, and you just want someone to put the bull out of its misery. A walking dead bull, if you will. Cruel really. Anyway, it’s worth a punt on Disney plus.
I've not watched all the sequel crap yet, but I might.
